Foods That Can Prevent Skin Cancer

May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of this important time, I wanted to give you facts that can help in the fight of this illness.

Many of us have not been to the dermatologist since our 20s, but it is most important for us 30s to get into that doctor and get a full body check. Especially since most of us spent a lot of time in the sun and tanning beds.

Since my Skin Cancer Scare, I have been researching on how to prevent it from happening in the future. I know staying out of the sun will help, but I figured there must be some foods that help destroy, or prevent abnormal cells from forming in the first place.

Here are a few I found.

Lemons seem to be nature’s super food. It really helps with so much. Studies have shown that eating 1TBS lemon zest weekly can shut down the growth of abnormal cells and cut your risk of skin cancer by 30%! You can try sprinkling over soups, salads, oatmeal and for a refreshing drink, water.

Eggs are rich in selenium a mineral that works inside cells to strengthen your skin’s defenses against UV radiation. This can help to reduces fine lines, age spots and melanoma as much as 37%! The dosage for this coverage is 2 eggs daily or 3 egg whites. Another bonus to eating eggs is that it stabilizes blood sugar that reduces diabetes risk by 30%!

Omega 3 fatty acids have been through a lot of studies with the benefits and skin cancer. Studies have shown that it can help your skin’s immunity from non-melanoma cancers. It helps your skin to not be so sensitive to UV rays after taking the acids. Get your fill from fish, olive oil, winter squash, or a supplement.

Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that in vitro has been shown to prevent or repair damage to DNA that potentially leads to cancer development. Lycopene also stimulates production of antioxidant enzymes, inhibits signals that promote tumor progression, and promotes programmed death of cancerous cells. With studies it has also been shown that it can prevent our skin from UV and sunburn damage. You can get the most concentrated lycopene from tomato paste.

And get checked. I am so glad I did. It is so much better to find skin disorders early. Get them removed in seconds like I did.
