8 Way To Keep Your Hands Looking Young

The other day, I started looking at my hands. I started noticing everyone's hands wherever I went. I realized that your hands can be an indicator of your age, just as much, if not more than your face. I decided that whenever I went out, I would wear the same SPF 50 on the back of my hands that I put on my face.

The skin on our hands is very thin. It does naturally renew itself, but cell production slows down after we're 30 years old (Real Great!) So, as the collagen, elastin and fat breaks down, that is when you can see the veins protrude and the fine lines appear.

Aside from spf and lotion, there are so many other things that we can do to keep our hands looking youthful.

1. Use a gentle soap
Certain soaps can strip off the natural oils on our hands and dry them out.

2. Wear gloves when cleaning
Protect your hands when you are cleaning the bathroom, kitchen, floors, etc. The harsh cleaning chemicals can break down, and dry out your skin to make it look old. Hot water, bleaches, degreasers, soaps, and anti-bacterial agents are all culprits for drying and aging. Try applying a balm or moisturizer on your hands before putting on your gloves. The hot water will be beneficial to help the lotion penetrate your skin better.

3. Protect your nails
Try not to bite your cuticles. It can possibly cause loose, torn skin that can eventually crack. Your nails, cuticles and skin can become more dry and fragile as you age because of your body's lower oil production. Make sure to rub lotion or healing ointment every morning and night. A good alternative is to use Chapstick to keep them moist.

4. Exfoliate your hands every week
Try using an enriched, oil-based scrub. Your skin's elasticity may be getting loose and a good exfoliation can help restore some silky smoothness. A homemade scrub can do the trick just the same. Combine 1/4 tsp of olive oil and sugar and rub into your skin. Olive oil is full of omega-3 fatty acids which is a potent moisturizer. The sugar will exfoliate by removing dead, old skin cells to reveal younger skin.

5. Pay attention to dryness
If you have dry hands, try to use a lotion or cream that contains lactic acids, alpha hydroxyl acids or AHAs and hydrating urea. Apply after washing hands, bathing, or shower so that it locks into your skin.

6. Reduce dark spots and freckling
If you have started to notice some dark spots on your hands or "liver spots," which are hyperpigmentations that are caused from sun exposure. They can actually be fixed from your favorite face cream that reduces dark spots. So after you put on your face cream, or corrective cream. rub the excess on your hands.

7. Wear driving gloves
For some reason, this never occurred to me. I might actually try it. In the winter the cold weather exposure can cause cracked skin and that results in small wrinkles. The sun exposure in the summer can do the same.

8. Last and most important, wear sunscreen!
We all know that we should be wearing sunscreen on our face everyday, but we cannot forget about our hands. We should be applying sunscreen on our hands several times a day because we wash and wipe them more than any other part of our body. Make sure you try to use 30 SPF or higher.
