When Girl Meets 30

How to Drive Sales Even When Weather Keeps Customers Home

January 19, 2026 By Erin Kennedy Leave a Comment

When we’re young, snow days feel like the best things ever, meaning time off from school, snowmen, and a world of soft, snowy fun. But, when you’re a business owner with a physical store to think about, you may seethe when you hear the mere mention of a ‘snow day’. After all, from a business perspective, adverse weather like this can mean dangerous conditions, reduced staff numbers, and significantly fewer customers than you hoped for.

But does this mean your sales are completely doomed the moment snow starts to settle? Definitely not! Keep on reading to find out how you can get customers through your door, whatever the weather.

# 1 – Ensure Location Safety
Customer and employee safety should always be more of a priority to you than sales, which is why you should take the time to ensure a truly safe space before opening those doors after snowfall.

It’s especially worth having a company like Gresham’s Snow Removal on your books, as they can work quickly to clear large amounts of snow from your commercial building. They’ll even do this automatically based on the forecast, so that you can stick to your usual opening hours without safety worries! You should also be sure to take proactive safety steps, like gritting to prevent ice buildups, and ensuring a working boiler!

# 2 – Let Customers Know You’re Open
Even your best precautionary measures won’t help your bad weather prospects if customers think you’re shut. Admittedly, this is less of a worry if you live in an area with regular snowfall, as most people will assume it’s just business as usual. However, if you live in an area that doesn’t experience much snow, a lot of companies around you might shut when snow is at its worst.

This is good news for you, as it ensures that you get the first and potentially only pick of customers, but there won’t be any customers to choose from if you stay quiet about your opening. Instead, take to social media to post immediate updates about your opening hours. Regular ‘we’re open’ updates online are sure to make a difference to how busy you get, especially if you accompany them with cozy pictures of your space, or even the offer of free hot drinks for anyone who braves the cold.

# 3 – Power Up Your Online Sales
Even if customers know that you’re open, there’s every chance they simply won’t want to head out when the weather is at its worst. That’s why you also need to power down on online sales to ensure your business is a success even when snowfall gets really hard.

Promotions like free shipping or even money off on certain, weather-relevant items, can be especially helpful for ensuring a steady stream of online sales, all at the highest convenience for your customer base. And, trust us when we say that they won’t forget how you saved them from braving a blizzard!

Are you worried that upcoming snow could scupper your sales? Secure your sales prospects using these top tips!
