When Girl Meets 30

What’s Making your Home Look Old and Tired Right Now?

January 25, 2026 By Erin Kennedy Leave a Comment

If your home is tired and not feeling as luxurious as it could be, then now is the time for you to try to do something about that. This guide will tell you what steps you can take to try to improve your home’s aesthetic, while also making sure that you are making changes that are actually going to add value later down the line.

Matching Furniture

The first thing you need to look out for is matching furniture. Three-piece suites are often seen as a staple, but the issue with them is that they are a very dated concept when it comes to your home decor. They can also make your home feel as though it’s rather one-dimensional, which is the last thing you need. If you want to make changes, then simply buy a sofa and then buy a complementary, but not matching, set of armchairs. If you can do this, then you will find it easier to get the traditional style you are going for, but with a more modern edge. If you can apply this logic to other things in your home, like your dining chairs or even your dresser, then this will help a lot, too. Just make sure that you are not crossing the boundary between tasteful and being over-the-top, because if you do, then this will work against you a lot.

Old Bannisters

If your home has a very old and dated bannister, then now’s the time for you to get rid of that. If you do, then you will find that it is easier for you to not only upgrade the look of your space, but also make sure that you are not ignoring the things that are going to make the biggest difference. The best thing about investing in a new banner is that you can make your home look more modern while also increasing value. If you want to upgrade, then it’s worthwhile considering adding glass balustrades as this will make a huge difference, and it will also give you the chance to explore a more modern theme in your home.

Dated Tech

Another big thing to watch out for would be dated tech. It may be that your DVD player or your stacks of DVDs end up not being compatible with any of your other devices, and this is the last thing you need. Giving your home a complete overhaul will help you a lot here, and it will also give you the chance to have a bit of a clear-out. TVs and speakers are also now more discreet than ever, so you can probably get rid of your old TV stand and media cabinet. If you are in a position to swap to digital TV and if you can take out a Spotify subscription, then this will help you significantly as well, so be sure to keep this in mind, as it will make a big difference to you as well as to the overall theme and appearance of your home.
