We don’t always mean to collect so much stuff, but things do have a tendency to just… appear. We have birthdays, Christmases, and other celebrations where people like to give gifts, or you might go shopping and see a great bargain on something you don’t really need but do really want, and so on – soon enough, our homes just get full up, and although it’s true that some of the stuff is much-loved and wanted, the truth is that most of it could disappear and we wouldn’t even notice.
However, what if you could start saying yes to experiences rather than things? That could change everything and give you a much fuller life, rather than a fuller house. With that in mind, keep reading to find out more.
Experiences Stay With You
Think about all the things you’ve done, and there will be various experiences that really do stay with you even years later. But what about all the things sitting in your drawers, wardrobe, or garage? They’re much less memorable.
The great thing about experiences is that they don’t clutter up your home, but they can change you for the better in all kinds of ways, and they become a big part of your personal history and help you to grow. Something like hosting a casual hibachi at home night with family or friends is sure to be so much more joyful than adding yet another gadget to the kitchen, and you’ll remember it for a lot longer too.
Stuff Doesn’t Change Us
Objects are great when they give us that wonderful quick burst of excitement and satisfaction, but that’s only a short moment, whereas a good experience can give you feelings that last for a much longer time – even years, or a lifetime. So when you say yes to moments rather than adding yet another thing to your home, you’re choosing something much more valuable, whatever the monetary cost might actually be.
Don’t worry – you don’t need to ban shopping or become a complete minimalist (unless you want to), but instead it’s definitely worth asking if you need something, or if you’re going to remember it once it’s in your home. If the answer is no, save your money and have an experience instead.
Experiences Bring People Together
You’re (probably) not going to bond with anyone over a new lamp, but you can have a good chance of bonding over a lovely walk somewhere (or even one where the weather made it a little more tricky), or a weekend trip where you saw new things, or perhaps a meal you cooked that tasted far better than you expected it would. The simplest of things can become memorable experiences if you let them – and you should always let them.
Saying yes to experiences is basically just saying yes to yourself and to giving yourself a life that’s fuller, but not cluttered, and giving yourself the best memories to enjoy even decades after the moment itself has long passed.
