6 Apple Cider Vinegar Uses for Skin & Hair

May 28, 2020 By Erin Kennedy 4 Comments

Where once we would use almost anything to banish breakouts, in our 30s most of us are more conscious of what we’re putting onto our skin and into our bodies. Without knowing how different chemicals will affect us in the long run, most of us are looking for ways to keep things as natural as possible. The good news is that keeping your hair and skin glowing doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult – in fact, you don’t need to venture further than your grocery store! People have been using apple cider vinegar (ACV) as a beauty secret for years. Here are six ways you can use it to address your specific hair and skin needs:
Toner: Since apple cider vinegar works to reduce inflammation and eliminate bacteria, it’s an excellent toner for problematic skin. In an airtight container, combine 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 8 ounces of water. Soak a cotton ball with the mixture and apply to your face. While this mixture is budget friendly, even highly paid stars swear by it, including Scarlett Johansson.
Hair Rinse: Whether you’re battling buildup resulting from product usage or you’re having problems with dandruff, apple cider vinegar can come to the rescue! To combat product buildup, spritz a 50/50 ratio of ACV to water into your hair after shampooing. Allow it to soak in for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse.
For dandruff: You’ll also use a 50/50 ACV to water mixture in a spray bottle, but you’ll concentrate the spray onto your scalp. Wrap your hair in a towel, and allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes before rinsing. Always remember to avoid your eyes and ears when using the spray.
Wart Treatment: While this may sound like an old wives tale, even the Mayo Clinic advocates apple cider vinegar as a treatment for warts. Soak the wart in apple cider vinegar for 20 minutes, then gently exfoliate the area with a pumice stone to remove any dead skin. Coat with a thin layer of petroleum jelly. Soak a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar and adhere it to the wart with a Band Aid overnight. Some people complain of pain when using this method and suggest crushing an Aspirin to mix with the ACV before adhering it with a Band Aid.
Sunburn: In her book Apple Cider Vinegar Miracle Health System, author Patricia Bragg recommends adding one cup of apple cider vinegar to a cool bath. The ACV helps to re-balance the skin’s pH levels and assists in warding off infection and inflammation.

Digestion: You are what you eat! If you have problems with digestion, those issues will show up in your skin as dryness, sallowness, textural problems, or acne. As we age, the stomach tends to produce less hydrochloric acid, which is necessary in productive digestion. Apple cider vinegar acts to enhance the acids and digestive enzymes in your stomach. Add 2 to 3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 8 ounces of water as a tonic each morning. Bonus: this tonic also boosts your immune system and can help with weight management when taken before meals. It has been reported that is how Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas stays slim. Fergie has said: “I do vinegar shots. It has to be organic apple cider, unfiltered. Two tablespoons. For some reason I’ve noticed a difference on my stomach.” It helps to cleanse the colon, reduce bloating and cut cravings.

Love ACV. Read a book about how many things it “cures”. I haven’t tried Fergie’s weight loss (see this insane transformation) method which i think I will start to try ;-)
    Great article.

I never knew that apple cider vinegar was such a multitasker! I might have to give that tonic a try. We do sometimes use diluted white vinegar as a cleaning solution and it works great!

Very cool! I love it when products can be used for various things. Makes me even more happy that I bought a bottle. :)
