8 Do’s & don’ts of lip care

August 28, 2023 By Erin Kennedy Leave a Comment

Our lips, commonly viewed as a canvas for our emotions and sentiments, are crucial to our identity. Despite this, they are sometimes overlooked in our skincare operations. Lip neglect, on the other hand, can result in discomfort, unsightly dryness, and even long-term damage. Let’s delve into the world of lip care, learning the essential do’s and don’ts that can transform your lips from parched to velvety. We’ll lead you through a holistic approach to lip care, from water-free hydration to the art of gentle exfoliation. Learn about the advantages of sun protection and the wisdom of eating a lip-friendly diet. So, let us embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of a confident and healthy grin.

The Do’s and Don’ts

1. Do: Hydrate your lips

Whether you are looking for lip care products or wondering about the general habits that are beneficial to your lips, there are several do’s and don’ts. One of the most important do’s is to hydrate your lips. Keeping your lips hydrated is one of the most crucial aspects of lip care. Lips, like skin, can become dry, chapped, and unpleasant if not moisturized properly. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day boosts your overall health and hydrates your lips. Furthermore, using a high-quality lip balm or moisturizer daily helps build a protective barrier and trap moisture, avoiding dry and cracked lips.

2. Don’t: Lick your lips

While it may be tempting to lick your dry lips, this habit may aggravate your lips’ condition if you start making it a habit. Saliva contains digestive enzymes, which can break down the sensitive skin of your lips, causing dryness and irritation. When you lick your lips, the moisture on them evaporates quickly, leaving them much drier than before. Instead of licking your lips, keep them hydrated with a hydrating lip balm.

3. Do: Exfoliate Gently

Exfoliation is essential to any skincare routine, but it is crucial for your lips. Exfoliating regularly eliminates dead skin cells, allowing moisturizing products to penetrate your lips more effectively. To exfoliate your lips, use a mild lip scrub or a soft toothbrush to buff away the dry skin gently. You can also make your natural lip scrub using ingredients such as sugar and honey at home.

4. Don’t: Over Exfoliate

Exfoliation is healthy, although it might cause irritation and sensitivity. Lip exfoliating should be done once or twice a week to avoid aggravating the fragile skin of your lips. Excessive scrubbing or abrasive exfoliants can strip natural oils from your lips, making them more susceptible to dryness and chapping.

5. Do: Protect From Sun Exposure

Many people apply sunscreen to their faces and bodies but fail to protect their lips from the sun’s dangerous UV rays. Over time, UV exposure to the lips can cause dryness, discoloration, and even an increased risk of skin cancer. When you go outside, use an SPF-containing lip balm, especially if the sun is shining or you are at a high altitude.

6. Don’t: Pick at Flaky Skin

Picking or removing flaky skin from your lips may be appealing, but this behavior can be harmful. Lip picking can result in bleeding, pain, and infection. Rather than removing flaky skin with your fingertips, apply a soothing lip balm and let the skin exfoliate naturally over time. If the flakiness persists or worsens, consult a dermatologist or alter your lip care regimen.

7. Do: Maintain Healthy Habits

Your diet has a significant impact on the health of your lips. Nutrient deficits can exacerbate dryness and other lip-related illnesses. Consume a diet high in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, suitable for your skin. Avocados, almonds, seeds, and fatty fish can all help to nourish and maintain your lips’ appearance.

8. Don’t: Use Harsh Products

When selecting lip care products, avoid harsh or irritating ingredients. Fragrances, colors, and some substances may cause allergic responses or aggravate dry lips. Choose products with natural, gentle ingredients that are intended explicitly for lip care. If you have sensitive skin, use caution while trying new products and always perform a patch test.

Incorporating these basic but practical dos and don’ts into your lip care routine can significantly impact your lips’ health and appearance. By providing hydration, UV protection, and moderate exfoliation, you can keep them soft, supple, and pain-free. Excessive licking, over-exfoliation, and picking at flaky skin are all bad habits to avoid if you want to avoid further harm and promote natural healing. Keep in mind that your lips are a reflection of your general health as well as a canvas for expressions and sentiments. So, treat them with the respect and care they need, and you’ll be rewarded with lips ready to shine and increase your daily interactions and self-confidence.
