Is Your Baby Getting Enough Iron?

For the first 6 months of life, your baby has enough iron stores, but from there they start to deplete, but it is also the time to start introducing solids if you choose. At this time when introducing your baby to new foods, it is important to give your baby foods that contain iron.

Our bodies need iron to make hemoglobins, the protein which carries oxygen through our blood. Your pediatrician may give your baby a blood test to see if your baby needs extra iron and may prescribe an iron vitamin.

Babies who don’t get enough iron, he/she may experiences these symptoms:

  • slow weight gain
  • no appetite
  • pale skin
  • low activity level but high irritability (cranky and fussy)

If you see some of these symptoms, it is important you don’t self diagnose and get your baby checked out by their pediatrician.

Foods that are rich in iron are:

  • Broccoli
  • Sweet Potato
  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Egg Yolk
