In a perfect world, there is a never-ending budget for high-end fashion. Unfortunately for most of us, the season changes before we can save enough for that iconic statement piece that we have long lusted after and we are back to daydreaming. Of course, there are ways to secure a piece of timeless high fashion, and many of these options won’t break the bank. We have spoken to the savvy and stylish and done our research to bring you an affordable way to get high fashion on a budget, this season and every season after.
Consignment stores
If you haven’t heard of or been to a consignment store before, they are a fantastic way to buy or sell pre-owned bags. Each item belongs to an owner and when they are sold within the store the owner gets a portion of the sale and the consignment store takes a cut. Consignment stores are usually for antiques and luxury fashion, which means that they are accurately vetted for authenticity so that you are getting a good price and a real article of clothing or accessory. It’s also a great way to see and feel the products before you buy them online, and you won’t be disappointed as they have to be in very good condition to be allowed in these stores.
Fashion rental
In recent years, there have been a number of fashion rental agencies popping up online. Given the steep price of high fashion and accessories, renting can be a great way to look the part without committing to a huge cost. All you have to do is visit these rental websites, filter by size and designer and you can order an outfit for a few days which comes with a return postage satchel. Often you don’t even have to dry clean the rented goods as this is included in the price. Note, this option might not be for you as some have critiqued clothing rental companies due to the quality and cost.
Engage a tailor
If you can’t buy it, why not remake it? This is an option that not enough people explore, especially considering the number of local and international tailors that are easily accessible. All you need to do is supply your tailor with comprehensive photos of the clothes from each angle (which should be easy to get from websites, blogs and social media) and choose the right fabric. After a few fittings, you will be walking away with a high-end look that is fitted to your body!
Hunt for sales
Savvy shoppers will always make their purchases at midseason and end of season sales. In fact, by signing up for the newsletters of the designers you like you may even be able to see the sales before the public does. You can also take this a step further and set up some online alerts so that you know when your Wishlist items have been reduced. This might be a lot of manual work, and so you may prefer to just watch eBay and see when new outfits come online and jump on that bargain. The choice is yours!
Keep an eye on social media
Social media is a great place to connect, and there are many ‘buy, swap and sell’ groups online that are dedicated to single designers and a great place to score a bargain. You can also utilise Facebook’s Marketplace to search for your fashion items and can even set alerts so that you get a notification when something of interest is listed. These platforms are typically open to negotiation too, so don’t be shy in suggesting another price.
We hope you take these tips into consideration when looking for next seasons look and don’t break the bank in getting what you want. There are millions out there who are savvy shoppers and it is a great habit to get into with all of your shopping habits.
