“Healthy” Snacks For Your Kids that Might Not Be So Healthy

March 31, 2011 By Erin Kennedy 2 Comments

20% of your children’s daily calories come from snacks. And I am sure there have been times that you question yourself as a mom if you are giving your kids nutritious enough snacks. There are so many options out there and even more mixed signals of what is good and what is not. Here are a couple of snacks that have been busted for not being nutritious and a healthy replacement that your kids will want to eat and get the nutrition that their body needs.

–Yogurt can be very nutritious for your children but you have to know what to look for. Look for yogurt that is low fat, fat free, plain or Greek yogurt and sweeten them yourself with fruit and/or honey. It is a great source of calcium.

-Applesauce can have lots of added sugar, artificial color or sweeteners. Look for natural or unsweetened with no added sugar.  Look at the ingredient list and make sure apples and watter are the main ingredients.

-Most Granola bars are loaded with sugar and hydrogenated oils, and do not provide any protein, whole grains or fiber. Try giving your kids trail mix. It is healthy and packed with antioxidants. You can put together a great mix with dried fruit, whole grain cereal, nuts and dark chocolate chips. Your kids will love it.

-Baked Chips are lower in fat but offer little nutrients. Try whole wheat pita chips or popcorn for a good source of whole grain.

-Fruit Leather can seem like a healthy snack but most brands are loaded with sugar and lack much fruit and nutrients. You should really stay away from most brands except for Natural Value Fruit Leather and Stretch Island Fruit Leather that come in a variety of flavors and no added sugar.

-Popsicles that say they are “fruit” have added sugars and not much nutritional value. Look for popsicles made from 100% fruit juice and no added sugars that are just adding calories. Breyers or Dole “No Sugar Added” fruit bars are a great choice.

Thanks Pam! It is too easy to be fooled these days into thinking you are doing the right thing.
