Previously, I have written about How To Keep Your Va-Jay-Jay Fresh and Clean. However, sometimes there might be a funky smell that you can’t get rid of, or figure out what it is from. That might mean you have a yeast infection or the very common bacteria vaginosis (BV.)
BV is an infection caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. If you don’t get it checked out and treated then it can cause many more problems like pelvic issues and pregnancy issues. It can get confused with a yeast infection because the symptoms are so similar. Itching, funky smell, dis-colored discharge.)
However, there are some steps you can take to lower your chances of getting bacterial vaginosis.
- Getting clean gently. We should all know by now that douching is not doing anything for you but changing your PH balance and making things worse. If you feel like you would like something to re-fresh yourself try an unscented feminine towelette after the bathroom, and in-between showers. A good option is La Fresh Feminine Hygiene Towelette.
- Eat more D-fortified dairy. Vitamin D reduces inflammation that can cause infection and the higher your vitamin D levels are, the lower your chances are to develop BV a new study shows. You can get more vitamin D from eating food like cheese, butter, milk, margarine and ice cream too. Spinach is a #1 choice for lowering chances of BV because it is full of vitamin A and folate. Use in sandwiches, soups, and salads.
- Low-fat diet (avoid these 4 diet mistakes) can lower your chances of BV. Check the labels to make sure you are not ingesting hidden fat. A good slimming trick is to drink an 8 oz. glass of vegetable juice every day before a meal. Through a study at the University of California, it has been shown to tame your appetite and lead to faster weight loss.
- Try to de-stress. Lots of stress can decrease your body’s immunity that can allow extra bacteria to overgrow. A good way to de-stress is to listen to your favorite soothing music for 30 min, talk to a girlfriend, or watch a 30 min television sitcom where you are sure to laugh.
If you notice a smell or itch, it is best to get it checked by a doctor so they can treat it and possibly prescribe an antibiotic. It is important to not wait on this one.
