I have been thinking so much about Guiliana Rancic and the article I wrote about her newly discovered breast cancer. I can’t get over the fact that she is 36. I have also heard from many of you who have had a Sister, Aunt, Mother, Grandmother or Cousin who discovered they had breast cancer when they were in their 30s. Some of these women are survivors and some are not. It is truly heartbreaking. Who would think that you could get such a serious illness so young? I saw an interview today with a doctor that specializes in breast cancer says you should get a mammogram every year once you turn 40. So what about us? I hate that insurance will only cover certain tests at a certain age, or if you have family history. What about Guiliana? She is truly lucky because she has NO family history, and what if she had waited 4 years until she was 40 to get her test. It would truly be too late.
Well ladies, I know that we have been told about self-breast exams since we started going the gynecologist, but I think we need a reminder. Before this week, I couldn’t tell you the last time I did a self-breast exam. I always counted on my gyno to do it for me. But I know now that I should do it a least once a month. It doesn’t take much time to check it out in the shower.
So here are the tips to make sure you are doing it right. Do it ladies. If you find something it may be nothing, or means that you found it so early, that it could be 100% survival rate. Our health is just as important no matter what our age.

I’m a Gynecologist, just posted on my FB page what Fibrocystic Breast Changes may feel like. Our breasts are made of fat and glandular tissue. Fibrocystic changes may feel more dense, grainy, or bumpy (like ‘bubble-wrap paper’) than the softer fat tissue.
