When Girl Meets 30

I Left My Heart in San Francisco

September 5, 2013 By Erin Kennedy 4 Comments

Last week I shared my Glamping Trip to the Cambria Winery in Santa Maria, California. If you ever get the chance to glamp, I highly recommend it. Especially if you like camping, but don’t like peeing in a hole.

My husband and I decided to drive up to San Francisco after our glamorous camping trip because he had never been there. And if you are that close to an amazing city like that, you have to take the time to check it out.

I love San Fran, and I haven’t been there in years. I was super excited to see it again with the hubs. San Fran is not like many places. It is crazy beautiful, the food is crazy good and there is so much to see. I hope you enjoy my photos since I think you can get most of our experience through the photos. Besides, most of the photos are food photos, and who doesn’t like looking at food photos? Or is that just me?

If you have never been, you should totally put this on your bucket list. But be warned, it is chilly. And a gal from Phoenix was not prepared for a summer in San Fran. It was foggy every morning until the early afternoon and the high was usually 70 degrees. And that was the beginning of July! I was not ready for that when I am used to an average of 110 degrees during the summer.

We decided to take the scenic route and drive up interstate 1 to San Fran. We wanted to rent a car and we were given two choices; a Chevy Cruz or a Mustang. You already know what we decided on.

It was the long way to get to San Fransisco, but it was totally worth it. It was so beautiful to drive up the coast of California.

We stopped in Monterey, Ca to have some lunch and check out the city. I was of course was craving some fish and chips (or salad for me) and some clam chowder.
We walked down the Monterey pier and had to stop at Ghirardelli ice cream shop and we shared a caramel sundae. So glad we decided to share, it was huge!

We got into San Francisco and we were staying at the Grand Hyatt. Great hotel and amazing view of the city. We were right downtown in the financial district.

We were exhausted, so we wanted a nice dinner that was close to our hotel. We walked a couple blocks to this Italian restaurant that the concierge recommended. It was so good! I got pasta with fresh crab (I was all about the fresh seafood on this trip, we were by the ocean!) The hubs got a polenta with veal.

The next morning we took a ferry to Sam’s restaurant in Tiburon. I can’t tell you how many people recommended this place and it didn’t disappoint. I started my Sunday feast with a bloody mary.

For our appetizer we had some ahi tuna in an avocado with wonton chips and we decided to try something new and had oysters for the first time.

Looking back a the town of Tiburon from the ferry.

The next day, we decided to walk around town. We visited Chinatown and Little Italy. We are a pizza lover’s kind of couple. Lot’s of people do bar crawls, but we decided to do a pizza crawl through Little Italy. It was crazy how different each pizza slice was to the next. I highly recommend walking around any city and try a bunch of pizza. How else is there a way to spend an afternoon?

When you’re in Little Italy, who doesn’t get a homemade cannoli?
After our walk around the town, we went to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Obviously, more clam chowder on the pier.

On our last night, we decided to have a romantic dinner. We went to Bourbon Steak a Michael Mina Restaurant.

Duck fat fries with sea salt, cajun and herb with three sauces. OMG!

My deconstructed wedge salad.

Butter poached lobster
Halibut with crispy leeks, almonds and mushrooms
Before we left, we made it a point to visit Sweet Maple to try their “Millionaire’s Bacon.” We saw this restaurant on the travel channel as some of the best bacon. I cannot express to you the taste of this bacon. It is unlike anything I have ever eaten in my life. I thought it would be good, but holy cow, it was crazy good. I have never had bacon like this in my life! You must go to this place and order just the bacon if you have to. I had the pancakes, and the hubs had the french toast, and they were both so super good, but if I go back, I will just order a plate of bacon and be the happiest gal around!
