Improving Your Quality of Life as a Tinnitus Sufferer

October 27, 2022 By Erin Kennedy Leave a Comment

Tinnitus might not seem like a big deal to the people who do not suffer from the condition, but anyone who does have it knows that it can completely take over your life and significantly impact your mental health along with your hearing.

The good news is, if you have tinnitus, there are a number of very effective things you can do to improve your quality of life, including the following:

Get a hearing aid

Many people who have tinnitus would benefit from having a hearing aid fitted. Hearing aid technology has come on leaps and bounds in recent years; they are smaller and more effective than ever before and they can help to balance out the ringing sounds you hear so that you suffer far less from them.

Wear earplugs

One thing that will help to prevent your tinnitus from getting worse is wearing a pair of high-quality musician’s earplugs whenever you are attending concerts or events where the volume is likely to be loud. This will enable you to enjoy the event without it setting off that horrible ringing noise in your ears.

Meditation

You might be wondering how meditation can possibly help you improve your quality of life when you are living with tinnitus. It’s simple really; meditation enables you to better tune into your body, and better tune out annoying thoughts and sounds that would otherwise disturb your equilibrium, So, although it certainly cannot cure your tinnitus, it can help you to live with it more effectively so that you ultimately suffer less.

Try yoga too

Some tinnitus sufferers find that yoga is really good at helping them to relax and get in touch with their body, in a similarly healthy way to meditation, so adding it to your arsenal of tools to deal with tinnitus could be very sensible.

Use a sound machine

Something that can help you to suffer less when your tinnitus hits is to use a sound machine. Sound machines are able to play a range of noises including white noise and the sound of running water. You can often use them to mask the ringing sound of tinnitus, so you can get a good night’s sleep or sit back and relax for a while without having to worry about your tinnitus ruining things for you.

Therapy

Therapy, particularly, cognitive behavioral therapy can help you deal with your feelings about the situation you find yourself in. often, what ruins your day is not the tinnitus itself, but the negative feelings you have about your tinnitus, so if you can use CBT to change your thoughts and turn out tinnitus a bit more, it will definitely help to improve your quality of life.

Multiple distractions

Using several things to distract you at once, such as listening to a sound machine while drawing or reading a book, is a good way to really take your mind off the tinnitus and find some respite.

Having tinnitus doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all that life has to offer!
