Protect Your Hair From Chlorine This Summer- 8 Hacks To Keep Your Hair Healthy

Summer is almost here! Swimming is here! Hot tub times are here! Vacations are here, (well hopefully.) If you are spending anytime in any water that has chlorine, you might wonder what it is doing to your hair.

Chlorine is commonly used in swimming pools to keep the water clean and free from harmful bacteria. However, it can have a detrimental effect on your hair, whether you’re an adult or a child. Chlorine strips the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness, brittleness, and even discoloration, particularly in lighter hair shades.

Cleaning chlorine off your hair after swimming is crucial to maintain its health, shine, and overall manageability. By promptly and effectively removing chlorine, you can prevent long-term damage and ensure your hair remains vibrant and strong.

It is not doing anything good for your hair and could be really drying it out. You can protect your hair a lot easier than might think. With just a little bit of water.

Tips to protect your hair from chlorine:

  • If you saturate your hair with pure clean water before you get into the pool, it will keep the chlorine from absorbing into your hair follicles and therefore, drying and damaging.
  • Just keep a bottle of water in your bag when venturing out and soak your hair in the water. Your hair will thank you.
  • You can also apply leave-in conditioner before you hit the pool. Your hair will absorb everything it can absorb with the conditioner. It will also be good for your hair. A good excuse to deep condition.
  • Rinse Immediately: As soon as you get out of the pool, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water. This helps to remove a significant amount of chlorine before it has a chance to dry and bond with your hair. 
  • Use a Swimmer’s Shampoo: Invest in a shampoo specifically designed for swimmers. These shampoos are formulated to effectively remove chlorine and other chemicals from your hair.

     

  • Apply Conditioner Before Swimming: Wet your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner before entering the pool. This creates a protective barrier that minimizes chlorine absorption.

     

  • DIY Baking Soda Rinse: Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with one cup of water and use it as a rinse after swimming. Baking soda neutralizes chlorine and helps restore your hair’s natural pH balance.

     

  • Apple Cider Vinegar Solution: Rinse your hair with a mixture of one part apple cider vinegar to four parts water. This solution can help remove chlorine residue and restore your hair’s shine and smoothness.
