Road Taken! – Love For 30 Project

Would you like to guest post join the Love for 30 Project? I would love to hear your story. Email me for all the details to guest post. [email protected]

As young children my sister Brooke and I thought the age of 30 was ancient. We could never have comprehended that life after 30 would be this much fun. How wrong we were because here we are today in our 30s, living life to the fullest and excited about what life has to offer.

It was our late 20s when we started our business working across the oceans because Brooke lives in the States and I live in Australia. During the last kilometer of one of our favourite seven kilometer walks in Sydney, The Bay Walk, Brooke asked me to join with her in a business venture she had been thinking about for some time. Luckily I didn’t think too hard about this because at the time I didn’t realize the enormity of what we were about to embark on and as I look back today I am amazed at how far we have come. So we left our well-paid stable jobs, withdrew our life’s savings and pursued this business venture to fulfill our life long dream of working together on products for women.

The Bay Walk
Taking this different step definitely changed the pace and direction of our 20s, which in turn has put us in a totally different place in our 30s. There were times, especially as we approached 30, where we felt it was too difficult to go against the grain, not living the lives we felt society expected of us. Neither of us having children (as yet), nor was I married, and for a time I moved back home to make ends meet. I worked part time, so I could have the flexibility to travel for our company whenever the usually unplanned urgent situation arose.
There was a part of us that did miss the life where we were living near each other, and walking the Bay Walk, pushing strollers together in perfect harmony. However, in stepping out into the unknown we have become more open to change and new personal experiences, which for us was evident in all aspects of our lives.

My sister and I have both turned 30 and, aside from the occasional look in the mean and critical magnifying mirror, life could not be better. Our world has changed as we engage in different activities and sports, much more than we would have ever envisaged in our younger years. We have become more adventurous as Brooke climbs 14,000ft mountains, camps deep in the wilderness and cat skis in the winter, and I love to rock climb and give all sports a go. We both find balance with these endeavors, they allow us to switch off, refocus and refuel creatively.

So the thoughts we had as little girls were wrong, after turning 30 our lives have become even more exciting. We never anticipated how beneficial wisdom could be as we continue to grow with every day and year. We are of course still learning, but it feels good to know more about life than we did in our 20s, and to use that wisdom to live our lives to the fullest.

We do have visions of what we would like our future to be but what we have learnt is that even though life doesn’t always go according to plan, the most important thing is to be flexible and open to whatever comes your way.
