The cosmetic industry is one of the biggest industries in the world, and is only going to continue growing. According to Zion Market Research, the global cosmetic industry is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7% between the years 2018 and 2024. Furthermore, according to an online study conducted by the consumer research company NPD, 84% of women between the ages of 18 and 64 have worn makeup in the past year.
As you can see, cosmetics are very popular amongst women, and their popularity does not seem to be going away any time soon. However, the majority of women who use cosmetics do not know how to use them efficiently. In this article, I will be discussing four golden rules of makeup for your skin so that you can safely get the most out of your cosmetics.
Make Sure Your Skin Is Clean
Before applying any sort of makeup to your skin, the first thing that you should do is make sure that your skin is clean. This is because dust and other particles have a tendency to accumulate on your skin throughout the day, and that prevents your makeup from doing its job effectively. If you don’t make sure that your skin is clean before applying makeup, then you are not getting the full benefits that the makeup has to offer. I would suggest that in addition to cleaning your skin everyday, you use an exfoliating cleanser once a week. Doing so will make sure that your skin is clean.
Only Use FDA Certified Products
The United States law does not require cosmetic products and ingredients, other than color additives, to have FDA approval before they go on the market. However, they are FDA regulated. Essentially what this means is that the FDA has no authority to stop a cosmetic product from going on the market, regardless of what’s in it, until it has actually harmed people. Even though the law does not require cosmetic products to get FDA approval, that does not mean that none exist. Generally speaking, it is easy to tell whether or not a product is FDA approved, but if for whatever reason you can’t figure it out, you should check the pigments in the product. Organic pigments tend to be safer than inorganic pigments, and if there is absolutely no way for you to tell if a product is FDA approved, then you should always choose the product that contains organic as opposed to inorganic pigments. Knowing how to decipher the difference between organic and inorganic pigments is very important if you want to make sure that your makeup is safe.
Wear Sunscreen
When most people think of sunscreen, they associate it with the summer time. However, sunscreen is not just a summer product. Even during the winter time when the sun is not as prominent, the sun’s rays can still be negatively impacting your skin. This is because these harmful rays can cause cell mutilation, which may cause your skin to wrinkle even during the winter time. Due to this, wearing sunscreen year-round is something everyone who is serious about their skin’s health should be doing. By applying sunscreen before using your makeup, you are protecting your skin from these harmful rays and are allowing the product to work efficiently. When looking for a sunscreen to use, try to find one’s that say “Broad Spectrum” and are an SPF 30 or higher. These type of sunscreens in particular do a better job of protecting you from the sun’s rays than others.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is crucial for the overall health of your skin. Drinking plenty of liquids has been proven to reduce wrinkles and make your skin look healthier. Just by simply making sure you are hydrated before you apply your makeup, you are instantly improving your skins overall health, and the effectiveness of the makeup. The best way to stay hydrated is to drink water. Products such as Powerade and Gatorade provide hydration, but they also contain a lot of sugar which has a negative impact on your skin.
In summary, many women use makeup on a daily basis, but don’t know how to get the most out of it. Luckily, all you have to do is follow the four golden rules I have provided in this article, and the makeup that you use will be making your skin look better than it ever has before.
