Understanding Disabilities And Where To Get Help For Loved Ones

October 3, 2022 By Erin Kennedy Leave a Comment

Disabilities come in all shapes and sizes. Some occur from birth, whilst others are caused by injury. From freak accidents to injuries that happen in a conflict environment, the human body is something that can be incredibly vulnerable.

It’s not until something happens that many of us realize just how fragile the body can be. However, disabilities encourage us to make changes and to seek the world from that individual’s view.

By being able to appreciate the obstacles that many have in their way when it comes to disabilities, the right action can be taken to make life easier for them. Understanding disabilities can be a great way of helping any loved ones in life who need it.

What common types of disabilities are there?
There are many disabilities out there, some more obvious than others and some that have garnered more attention over the years. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new, so here are a few common types of disabilities.

  • Visual impairments
  • Hearing impairments
  • Congenital conditions; long-term injuries and progressive neuromuscular diseases
  • Immunological conditions
  • Speech and language
  • Learning disabilities
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Mental health conditions

When disability is defined more clearly, there are likely a lot more people around a person that consider themselves to have a disability.

The challenges that come with a disability
With so many different types of disabilities, it’s a shame that there isn’t more currently being done in society when it comes to accessibility and aid for disabilities.

There are a number of challenges that come with having a disability, depending on what type of disability that is.

For example, those with a physical disability might find access requirements to be limited in day-to-day life. This can make it challenging to do all the usual errands that many of us do without even considering it.

With mental health conditions, a big obstacle can be the mind and how it impacts daily life. For some, going to work or simply getting out of bed in the morning can be a major challenge.

An introduction to help and guidance for the disabled
In order to make life easier for those with a disability, more can be done through both education and action.

Know what aid is available
There are plenty of opportunities for aid out there, especially when it comes to needing financial assistance. A va disability claim, for example, can be helpful to know about when it comes to getting financial relief for an injury caused within the working environment.

Make changes where possible
Not everyone can make a huge difference but the small changes can often be influential. For example, fighting locally to help encourage more businesses to make access-friendly venues, can be just one small step in a positive direction. After all, everything should be accessible to those who need it.

Disability is something that no one should ignore and it’s important to all do our bit in helping make the world a more disability-friendly place!
