Dear Thirteen-Year-Old Me: Love For 30 Project

—————————–

When we are young, we can’t even imagine what 30 is like…well, aside from it being really OLD. But, hey, here we are. It certainly doesn’t feel like we’re almost half way through a lifetime and, personally, I’m still learning. But there are definitely a few things that I wish I had known way back when…things that, perhaps, I could only tell myself. Here is my little list of insights for my 13 year old self:

Dear Thirteen-Year-Old Me,

  • You keep begging your mom to let you do your own laundry. Stop it! You will grow to HATE laundry. Piles and piles of it will infiltrate your life – you will feel suffocated by it. Quit rushing to get started!!
  • You will never be able to imagine how much you will love wine. You are going to think the vodka-spiked Slurpees you drink in the bushes before high school dances are pretty effing amazing…trust me – they have nothing on the glass of wine that greets you every night when you get your kids to finally go to sleep.
  • When a boy doesn’t call or ignores you…it is NOT because he likes you. I know, I know…you will want to obsess about him and try to make him somehow magically like you. He won’t. Life is too short – move on.
  • People, for the most part, don’t really change. You are a good judge of character…trust your instincts and keep steering clear of the a**holes.
  • Save your money. Always have a little something stashed away for yourself…
  • The dentist never gets any better…worse in fact. Get the braces…your parents are tricking you by giving you a choice (i.e. they don’t want to pay the bill – which you eventually will have to).
  • Tori Spelling’s breasts will still confuse you – even in your 30s.
  • Wear sunscreen. The unsightly crease above your left eyebrow will thank you.
  • Kegels. If you want to be able to jump on a trampoline or go dancing without peeing your pants…it’s never to young to get started on these.
  • Appreciate and take care of your body. It is going to work hard for you by traveling around the world, running marathons and birthing two children (to name a few).
  • Seek out women that inspire you…the media will never do a good job at representing your full potential – you will have to find out for yourself
  • Your mom is (mostly) right. She drives you crazy now, but she will end up being your biggest fan and best friend. Love her.
  • The short bleached hair-do you get in university is a HUGE mistake. Nobody will tell you until years later.
  • You will resent the volume of your breasts in your twenties. Bad news–once you have kids, they will never be the same and nothing will contain them. You will cry. Embrace your teensy, upright, twenty-something boobies.

  • Worry less – it’s all gonna work out fine.

What would you tell your 13 year old self, if you could?

Melissa Carr is the creator of the popular Vancouver based blog The Thirties Grind. She says, “Life in your thirties is a grind. It was not until recently that I realized most of us in our thirties are in the same boat…a boat that almost always feels like it is slowly sinking…but in the end, the grind is worth it.” Her blog covers all that life in your thirties holds, and her personality and writing style are the glue that hold it all together.
