Read on to find ways to maintain your youthful, gorgeous glow after your thirties.
1. Moisturize Day and Night
As you get older, the skin loses some of its elastin and collagen, and moisture retention often decreases. Therefore, it’s vital that you moisturize several times a day. In the morning, use a lightweight SPF under your primer and makeup to lock in moisture throughout the day. At night, consider using a thicker cream. During the night, your skin does most of its reparative work that includes cell turnover and exfoliation.
When buying moisturizer, opt for a product that comes in a pump as opposed to a large tub or jar. This will help to prevent the spread of bacteria that’s transmitted from your hands to the product.
2. Wear SPF Daily
You’ve likely already heard this command before, but it’s definitely worth repeating. You must wear sunscreen everyday. Yes, every single day. Even when it’s overcast or you only anticipate being outdoors for a small window of time. Sun damage is the single biggest factor in premature aging, and time spent in the sun unprotected can lead to hyperpigmentation, wrinkling, sagging, and poor skin tone. If you aren’t a fan of heavy SPF, consider using a moisturizer and foundation that contains SPF 15 or higher. If buying an expensive formula will encourage you to wear sunscreen daily, then definitely splurge! However, you can find quality formulas online and in drug stores.
3. Exfoliate for Luminous Skin
Just because you’re in your thirties doesn’t mean you’re exempt from the occasional breakout. Therefore, it’s important to incorporate exfoliants like lactic acid and salicylic acid into your cleansing routine. This will help to unclog pores, clear blemishes, and even out the complexion.
Another powerful exfoliant is retinol. Though it can be purchased over-the-counter in smaller dosages, versions like Retin-A require a prescription from a dermatologist. A highly concentrated form of Vitamin A, retinol has been known to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, combat acne, produce collagen, and plump the skin.
4. Take Care of Your Eyes
It’s important to keep the thin, delicate skin around the eyes hydrated. Before going to sleep, apply an eye serum or an eye cream. While you’re sleeping, the formula sinks into skin, decreasing the appearance of wrinkles and protecting the area from further damage.
5. Eat the Right Foods
Your diet (avoid these 4 diet mistakes) directly affects the health of your skin.
Be sure you’re eating foods rich in nutrients and amino acids, consuming lean protein, and stocking up on fibrous produce like kale, apples, and brussel sprouts. Limit your alcohol intake due to its drying effect. Also, be sure you’re consuming enough water each day. This will help your body flush out impurities and keep your skin hydrated and glowing.
