Every year, millions of people visit the city of New York. It’s one of the most impressive in the world and a truly global city, after London and Tokyo. If you’re a sports fan, where are you supposed to go in the city, and what are you supposed to do?
Fortunately, New York is one of the most sporting cities in the world and has options for everyone, whether you’re into swimming, baseball, or something completely random.
So where should you go if you’re a massive sports fan and visiting this city?
Madison Square Garden
If you’re going to be in the Midtown Manhattan area, make sure you check out Madison Square Garden. This famous circular arena sits right on top of Penn Station and is the beating heart of sports in New York. It’s famous for being home to both the NBA’s Knicks and the NHL Rangers, and it’s incredibly loud once you get inside, so you might want to take earplugs with you.
When games are on, you can take the all-access tour. This provides you with a bit of history behind the venue and how it grew into such an iconic location.
The Yankee Stadium
For those wanting to head a bit further afield to the Bronx, there’s the Yankee Stadium. You can find this by taking the D or 4 subway line up to 161st Street and stepping directly onto the location famous for being baseball royalty. The multi-billion-dollar stadium currently on the site opened in 2009, but it has a limestone exterior and frieze that replicates the monumental feel of the original venue.
There’s also plenty to do near Yankee Stadium. We suggest going to one of the incredible nearby restaurants to eat, or perhaps even staying in a hotel in the Bronx.
Rucker Park
Rucker Park is New York City’s true home of basketball. It’s located in Harlem at 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard and relatively easy to get to on the subway.
The location is famous for being the legendary court that hosted NBA champions like Wilt Chamberlain and Julius Irving. There’s a hall of fame on site, and there’s plenty of streetball nearby that you can play completely for free.
USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre
Have you ever wondered where the U.S. Open is held? Well, it turns out its USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in Queens.
This location is famous across the globe and comes to life at the end of August and early September when the Grand Slam tournament is on. What’s nice about this location, though, is that it has sprawling grounds, and you really feel like you can spread out even if you’re in the middle of a large city. In this respect, it’s a bit like Wimbledon in London.
You can go to Flushing Meadows, which has a festival-like atmosphere, and enjoy a signature Honey Deuce cocktail while viewing celebrities all over the place. The facility remains open to the public outside of the actual tournament, and you can rent courts there if you want to play a match like a tennis pro.
