Last week I told you about some super inspiring women from Team SCA, the Volvo Ocean Race, which is the world’s toughest sailing race. This group of women is the only all-female team in this race that lasts 9 months and sail around the world.
If you didn’t read my post from last week, you can read it here: Inspiring Women Everywhere – Team SCA & Volvo Ocean Sailing Race.
These women inspire me so much and it reminded me of the woman that has inspired me my whole life, my grandmother Irene. We just celebrated her 99th birthday last month, and she couldn’t be doing better. When I think about all that she has gone through in her 99 years, it inspires me to be like her and to be a better person.
My grandmother was born in 1916 in New York City. She was the youngest of 4 girls and lost her mother to pneumonia when she was 8. She was unable to graduate from high school because she had to get a job to help the family during the depression. She married my grandfather in 1936, and had four children, but she lost her first child who was ran over by a truck when a relative was babysitting. My grandmother got her high school GED in her 40s, and went to work as a real estate agent, and she worked until she was in her early 80s. She lost my grandpa 20 years ago and has lived alone ever since.
My grandmother has been through some unimaginable things through her life. Lived through 2 world wars, death, the depression, finacial hardship and yet, she is the most independent, strong and inspiring woman I have ever met and I am so thankful to call her my grandmother.
Team SCA is celebrating inspiring woman and believes that everyone should love their life to the fullest. SCA has created a website to share a photo of the woman in your life who has inspired you and upload it to their “Amazing Women Everywhere” photo mosaic. I submitted my photo of my grandmother and I to the photo mosaic, and encourage you to upload a photo too of the woman who inspires you the most.
SCA believes that everyone should have the opportunity to live life to the fullest, and we are committed to creating value for people and nature. To champion these ideals, SCA launches Amazing Women Everywhere, to celebrate women who have a positive impact on others.
The women of SCA’s all-female racing team, Team SCA, exemplify this spirit. They have come from all walks of life and backgrounds to take on one of the world’s most challenging endeavors, the Volvo Ocean Race. For nine months, their journey of hard work and determination will inspire millions around the world. Follow along with Team SCA on Facebook!
We aim to gather thousands of stories from all over the world and inspire thousands more by illustrating that amazing women truly are everywhere. Visit http://www.teamsca.com/awemosaic to submit a photo of an amazing woman in your life.

You are lucky to still have your grandmother! She is indeed a tough one having to go through 2 world wars and surviving it. I agree, she is an amazing woman! She must be very disciplined too to still look so healthy at her age and younger than her age. She is very beautiful :)
