It is important that you are always trying to improve yourself instead of staying at a standstill throughout life. Personal growth is essential for both your personal and your work life. By making a small improvement every week, you can change not only your own life but also the others around you. Whether you try and read more, take on a new hobby or overcome a fear, there are many ways you can develop as a human being.
There is always a way to improve and focus on your self-growth. Plus, by being a better person, others around you will notice and be better themselves without realizing it. After all, the more positive you are around a person, the easier it is for them to be more positive. Below we have put together a list of ways you can better yourself and work on your self-improvement.
1. Increase the number of books your read
If you don’t read, try, and start reading more often. If you do read, try to increase the number of books you read a month. Reading will not only help improve your vocabulary, but it also helps with knowledge and wisdom. The more you take in when reading a book, the more it can help improve your spelling and you to become a better writer. There is a book for everyone; whether you like fiction or nonfiction, pick a book that aligns with what you enjoy daily. For example, if you love football, you may enjoy reading an autobiography by a player you enjoyed watching.
2. Overcome your fears
Being scared of something is not very nice for you and can leave you feeling unhappy. That said, fear is something you have built up in your mind but can be overcome. No matter your fear, whether it be spiders, heights, or needles, you can break the fear barrier and become more settled. By overcoming a fear, you can grow as a person and realize that if you can defeat a fear, you can do anything.
3. Try and get up an hour or two earlier
Getting up early can be difficult for some people, but it is good to try and break this habit. By getting up earlier, you can achieve so much as you have more hours in the day. Getting up 2 hours earlier each day for a year would give you 730 extra hours, an additional 30 days a year to be more productive and achieve something new. Changing the time you wake up can be a challenge, but the more you do it, the easier it will be.
4. Try to stop a bad habit
We all have bad habits that we would like to stop. Whether that be smoking, drinking too much, or oversleeping, we all have the power to prevent these when we put our minds to it. Stopping a bad habit can be a challenge, but you will feel a sense of achievement and better yourself by overcoming it. Try and replace bad habits with good habits instead.
5. Practice act of kindness
It can really make a difference to your day when someone is kind to you, so why not return the favor to someone else? Currently, life is hard for many people, with COVID being spoken about all over the world. Why not try and improve someone’s day with an act of kindness? You’ll also find being kind helps make you more positive overall. It doesn’t have to cost anything; try to smile at people as you walk past them, maybe compliment a stranger on their clothes or make a donation to a charity you believe in.
6. Enroll in a new course
Many of us have finished college or university and have not studied for a long time. Instead of forgetting about education, why not enroll yourself in a new course to help with your personal development. The course can be on anything that interests you, from learning graphic design to enrolling in an online business degree program. Learning a new skill will also help with a career change or put you in a better position for a promotion at work.
7. Be more positive
It’s never nice being around someone negative as it brings the overall mood down of a room. Instead of being negative, try and practice being positive for 24 hours. Every time you are negative, you must start again and put £1 in a pot. This will make you aware when you are negative, but by being positive, it will make you feel better and see the world in a better way.
8. Learn a new language
Learning a new language can improve you as a person and help with your career progression. You don’t have to go to a college to learn a new language; you can enroll in an online course and take it at your own pace. Learning a new language will allow you to travel more and communicate in their language when visiting. You’ll also benefit from improved memory, be able to multitask better, and make new friends.
9. Take up a new hobby
Taking up a new hobby is fun, a great way to improve yourself, and a way to meet new people. A new hobby would test you and give you a newfound motivation if it was missing beforehand. Whether your new hobby is sports-based or less active such as gardening or cocktail making, feeling yourself develop can bring a great sense of accomplishment.
10. Recognize your flaws and try to improve them
Unfortunately, we all have our flaws. As much as you may not want to admit it, they are there and can sometimes come out. Whether it be impatience, anger or that you rush things; it is always good to recognize this and work on yourself to improve them. Although you will never get rid of your flaws, you can recognize signs when they are coming out and try to reduce the impact they have on others by addressing them.
11. Take yourself out of your comfort zone
Taking yourself out of your comfort zone can be rewarding. The next time you find yourself considering saying no because you feel nervous, remember that feeling and say yes. By going out of your comfort zone, you will improve yourself and help you grow as a person. It makes you realize that you can do something and not to doubt yourself in the future.
12. Reduce the amount of screen time
With a world that is social media focused, it can be hard to switch off. Have you ever looked at the amount of time you have spent on social media, whether that be Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram? The time it presents can be shocking and shows that you should reduce the amount of screen time you have. Having a break can be useful for your mental health and well-being.
Try and use the time you would have spent on your device to do something different, go for a walk, or take the bikes out. It can be a lot more rewarding and help to improve you as a person.
Taking in just one of the tips above could make a big difference to your day and help with your self-improvement. Try and start with one and then add another a few days later and see if you feel better after. Sometimes it’s a case of actively thinking about improving yourself instead of just getting on with your day to day activities. Just remember to not be too hard on yourself, instead be kind, and any progress is still progress. Remember that the above are a few tips that we recommend; however, there are plenty other that you may benefit from.
