Unexpected Issues You Can Run Into As A Homeowner

January 13, 2026 By Erin Kennedy Leave a Comment

As a homeowner, there are always issues that you could face, but for some reason we all think that it’s never going to be us. We all have this idea that no matter what, our home is going to be okay, but this is hardly ever true. In fact, chances are that you’re going to run into an issue that you didn’t expect, and this is going to be a pain for you if you don’t know how to take care of it.

Down below, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the unexpected issues that you can run into, and how you can handle them when they come about. So, if you would like to find out more, feel free to read on.

Leaks In The Roof

The first thing that we’re going to look at are leaks in the room. These are a lot more common than people believe, and it’s important to be prepared if this happens. Ideally, you should be completing preventative maintenance like checking the roof regularly to ensure that there is no visible damage or shingles that have moved out of place.

We know that it can feel like a pain to have to do this, but it’s for the best. This way, you keep your roof in ideal condition for as long as possible, and don’t have to worry about anything. Of course, if the worst does happen and you do end up with a leak in the roof, you need to make sure that you get up there asap to see if you can fix it yourself. Sometimes shingles have just moved or broken off and you need a replacement. Other times, the roof damage is more severe, and you’re going to need to have a roofing contractor come out to fix the issue.

Burst Pipes

Did you know that burst pipes actually impact more households than you would think? Just because you don’t hear about it all of the time, doesn’t mean that it isn’t happening. This can be caused by a number of things such as damage to the pipes, extreme pressure, or where the pipes have frozen.

The most important thing that you can do if you have a pipe burst in your home is turn the water off as soon as you can. While it won’t stop immediately as whatever is in the pipe will still need to come out, it will limit the damage significantly. Once you’ve turned the water off, contact an emergency plumber, and get them out to you asap.

Broken Down Appliances

Appliances break down all of the time, but if you’re not expecting this to happen then it can leave you in a little bit of hot water. Sometimes appliances are able to be fixed, and don’t need to be replaced entirely, and if this is true of your appliance we recommend going down this path. Get in touch with someone who specializes in fixing dishwashers, ovens, refrigerators or whichever appliance has broken.

You may even decide that you want to try and do this yourself. If you do, see if you can find anything obvious that is causing the issue such as a broken wire somewhere (if you can access them). However, we do not recommend trying to tinker with anything that requires you to remove anything, or mess about with electrics if you don’t have any training.

Pain In The Behind Pests

Pests can be an absolute nightmare. It’s easy to sit there and say that you would never have them, but the chances are that you could. It doesn’t always mean your home is dirty – this is a common misconception. Instead, it means that they have found a place to call home, whether that’s a dark corner somewhere, in the walls, or somewhere else.

If you have pests, or you think you may have some, then you need to get in touch with a local pest control company quickly. The longer you delay, the further the infestation can spread until it’s going to be even more of an issue to get rid of them.

Busted Windows

Another common issue that you may find yourself running into is broken or busted windows. Sometimes this doesn’t mean glass shattered everywhere, but cold breezes and drafts making their way into your home. This can create a super cold atmosphere and your heating will be wasted. If you do happen to notice these drafts then it may be time to replace your windows, they typically have a life expectancy of around thirty years. So, if your windows are older than this then get in touch with your local window and door company.

Storm Damage

Finally, if your home is exposed to a natural disaster such as a flood or storm then you may find yourself cut off from major utilities. While these are getting repaired and switched back on, what are you going to do? You need to have a plan in place for this as it can and does happen, sometimes when you least expect it to.

It might be that you are storing canned goods in your pantry or even your basement. It is also a great idea to store a 55 gallon water tank or more if you have space, you can get ones that even stack on top of each other. This is incredibly handy if your water is unclean or not working properly.

If your home is currently experiencing flooding then you need to get the floors and walls dried out as quickly as possible. You can buy special dryers that suck out the water and then get to work on the atmosphere. The last thing you want to be dealing with is mold and dampness in your property.

We do hope you found this article helpful and that it gave you some pointers on how to manage your house as a homeowner. Remember, it doesn’t have to be difficult owning a property and managing the repairs yourself. You just need to have money set aside to do so and not let your home run down.
